Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Energy Efficiency (EE) Specialist will assist the UMD Energy Manager to identify and develop tracking energy/water conservation measures. Assigned duties include leading or managing energy audit activities by UMD staff and contractors, maintaining an active list of energy conservation measures with associated cost and carbon impact estimates for each, tracking project implementation and associated measurement and verification activities as required for contract compliance and sustainability reporting. Upon request the EE specialist will prepare projections for campus wide impacts associated with implementation of all or a subset of tracked measures.

The EE Specialist will also work with other staff and departments within Facilities Management to use data collected in Facility Condition Assessments to enhance and inform energy/water project development and prioritization. The EE Specialist will also assist the Energy Manager to apply for and manage funding from utility rebate programs and any other third-party funding used to implement projects and perform other energy efficiency related support and analysis as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: 
  • Bachelor’s degree required in Physical Science, Environmental Science, Engineering, Engineering Technology, Building Technology or related technical field.

Experience:
  •  Six (6) years experience required in building energy systems design, operations, and analysis. Without a degree, eight to ten (8 to 10) years of experience is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Experience with energy conservation project development and implementation including energy auditing.
  • Knowledge of building energy systems.
  • Effective communicator (oral and written).
  • Adept with Microsoft Office, with deep experience using MS Excel for data analysis.
  • Familiar with typical project design documents.
  • Demonstrate some understanding of building energy systems and energy conservation projects.
  • Familiar with typical tools and techniques for evaluating building energy system performance and analysis.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering drawings.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Experience in conducting energy audits and managing 3rd party contractors for the evaluation and implementation of energy conservation measures.
  • Building energy system design and/or operating experience highly desirable.
  • Experience in using data from building automation and energy management systems to identify energy savings opportunities and prioritize energy savings projects.
  • Previous experience generating and reviewing energy saving calculations for energy conservation measures.
  • Experience with utility energy efficiency rebate programs.
  • Familiarity with LEED, EPA’s Portfolio Manager, Maryland’s energy conservation codes and requirements
  • Familiarity with building energy model software such as eQuest, Trane Trace.
  • Familiarity with MS Access is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Maryland energy building codes.
  • Previous field experience with energy project development on a university campus.

Additional Certifications:

Incumbent must possess a driver’s license, as duties require the incumbent to travel to and from meetings and project sites both on and off campus. If driving a state vehicle, incumbent must possess a valid MD Class C driver’s license or equivalent with fewer than six (6) points.

The hiring range for this position is $81,771 – $100,000.

Must have the ability to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to work from ladders; to manipulate equipment, tools and supplies; to have the manual dexterity to operate a computer; to wear and work in personal protective equipment (safety footwear, hard hat, protective eye and ear wear, etc.); to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to lift 70 pounds. While the physical demands listed above may be experienced, the position is primarily an office environment. This position is telework eligible of up to 1 X’s per week, subject to departmental approval.
