Program Dean for Art and Design beginning January 1, 2025

Portland Community College’s Arts, Humanities, Communication & Design Pathway is seeking an experienced manager to lead faculty and staff as a Program Dean of Arts and Design at a multi-campus community college in Portland, Oregon.

 

Portland Community College is seeking a collaborative transformational leader who will effectively navigate a large multi-campus environment during a time of organizational change. This leader will be expected to balance the needs of higher education at a community college with the best practices of the administrative area.

The Program Dean of Arts and Design will lead a team of dedicated department chairs, faculty, and staff in the Architectural Design and Drafting, Art, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Music, Music and Sonic Arts, Multimedia and the Theater Arts programs. Portland Community College welcomes students from diverse backgrounds and abilities to study and develop their skills in preparation for a variety of careers and/or transfer to four-year institutions. Our faculty work in conjunction with administrative staff, casual staff, student workers and Arts, Humanities, Communication and Design Pathway leadership to enhance our students’ learning experience by ensuring classes and facilities are well supported. Remote work to perform duties off site will be needed.

The successful candidate will have direct experience and strong knowledge of best practices in Career Technical Education and Lower Division Transfer Programs. They will also have direct experience implementing initiatives that address equity and opportunity gaps in the community college.

This position, under the direction of the Dean of Academic & Career Pathways for Arts, Humanities, Communication and Design, will be responsible for supporting, developing, implementing, and evaluating programming aligned with labor market, industry needs and college transfer. This position will also be responsible for partnering with department chairs, faculty, staff, academic affairs and student affairs colleagues to align programming with equitable student retention and success metrics.

Experience applying a collaborative and solution-focused approach to leadership, while nurturing a sense of community
  • Experience working within and between various systems, an understanding of classroom, lab and studio environments, spanning silos, creating interconnections and encouraging opportunities for creativity and collaboration
  • Ability to co-create with faculty and staff a clear vision and collaborative direction for the pathway based on their prior college teaching and curriculum development experiences as a part time or full time faculty member, department chair or other role in college administration Understands and implements multiple communication forms based on deep listening and feedback loops tailored to a diversity of audiences Experience/knowledge of working with budgets, strategic enrollment and scheduling
    • Experience/knowledge of the Arts and Design disciplines within this pathway which encompasses lower degree transfer and Career Technical Education programs

 

Minimum Qualifications

Starting Salary Expectations
Minimum $105,550 to range midpoint of $129,298. Placement will generally not exceed the mid-point, based on qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

After one year of management or confidential service, PCC also provides a 2% contribution to a 403(b) account for eligible management and confidential personnel. PCC offers a tax deferred annuity program and a deferred compensation program where employees may save additional pre-tax dollars for retirement.

Additionally, PCC provides a tuition waiver for you, your spouse/domestic partner, and dependent children under 24 years of age, as well as partial tuition reimbursement for full-time employees at other accredited institutions.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Work environment includes frequent disruptions and changes in priorities. Work is generally performed in an office environment with frequent interruptions and irregularities in the work schedule. Working hours may vary and occasional evening or weekend work is required. Frequent travel to other locations is required. No special coordination beyond that used for normal mobility and handling of everyday objects and materials is needed to perform the job satisfactorily.
