Dr. Chen Huang’s laboratory at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is actively recruiting postdoc fellows in Computational Biology. The Huang lab strives for mechanistic understanding and therapeutic insights of cancer and other complex diseases by developing and applying advanced computational methods for large-scale multiomics data analysis. We are particularly interested in coupling the next generation sequencing based genomics and mass spectrometry-based proteomics to characterize disease genomic abnormalities and interpret their functional outcomes seamlessly.

Several immediate projects for incoming lab members include:

(1) Developing novel computational algorithms to discover tumor antigens from genomic and proteomic data analyses.

(2) Multiomics data analysis to understand tumor gene expression dysregulation at protein level, (3) Proteomics-driven cellular pathway prediction and interpretation.

(4) interpatient cancer heterogeneity and precision oncology.

The PI was trained as an experimental and computational biologist and has strong productivity on both sides. During Ph.D. and postdoc, Dr. Huang has first/cofirst-authored papers in Dev Cell (2018 and 2020), Cancer Cell (2021), and Cell (2019 and 2021) and middle-authored multiple others in top-tier journals. Together with nationwide collaborators, our lab is committed to guide trainees to develop strong research expertise and carve successful career paths.

We welcome motivated young scientists to join us for our scientific journey. Ideal candidates would have:

1) PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, genetics, cancer biology, and other relevant disciplines.

2) Proficiency in programming with R and/or python.

3) Self-motivation and strong interests in biology and data sciences, an open mind, and abilities in fast learning.

The following experience or skill sets would be considered a plus:

  • Hands-on experience in machine learning and deep learning.
  • Knowledge and experience in processing mass spectrometry proteomics and scRNA-seq.
  • Demonstrated academic achievements in bioinformatics

The positions are for 2-3 years with possible extension. We provide competitive salary and benefits. The salary will be based or above the NIH guidance (commensurate with experience). To apply, please send an email to Dr. Huang (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) with current CV and contacts for 2-3 references, and a brief description of training background and career plans.

We are located in downtown Birmingham, a city with marvelous beauty of nature and low cost of living. UAB is ranked #20 of all U.S. institutions and universities in annual NIH funding. UAB School of Medicine is ranked within the top 30 for research in US Best Medical Schools. The laboratory is affiliated to the Department of Genetics and the O’Neal’s Cancer Center, both of which are loaded with great momentum and ambitious growth plans in the coming years.

About our Postdoc Office

UAB is committed to the development and success of outstanding postdoctoral scientists. Here at UAB, nearly 300 postdoctoral fellows are training currently in a variety of disciplines. Competitive postdoc awards are available including internships, grant incentives, funds to enhance education and collaboration outside UAB, and teaching opportunities at local universities. There is also a Postdoc Research Day with monetary awards. The Office of Postdoctoral Education strongly encourages UAB research mentors to follow the National Research Service Award stipend level guidelines, and postdoctoral scholars qualify for health, life, and other insurances. They also have the right to participate in the university’s 403(b) program and enjoy vacation, sick leave, maternity/paternity leave, and other benefits.
