About the Department

The primary function of the Undergraduate Admissions office is to identify, attract and enroll first year and transfer students with outstanding academic ability and potential. The department’s efforts are commensurate with NC State University’s annual and long-term enrollment goals for the University, including diversity broadly defined with regard to geography, background and other key attributes.

Essential Job Duties

The primary purpose of this Assistant Director position is to assist the Undergraduate Admissions office in planning and executing an impactful campus visit experience for prospective students and their families. Strong leadership within the Undergraduate Admissions team in terms of communication, planning, strategy and project management are key to the successful person in this role. Weekend and evening work will be required occasionally.

Responsibilities of the Assistant Director of Campus Visits include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Strategic planning and oversight of the campus visit experience.
  • Oversight of major admissions projects related to campus visits, events, recruitment and admissions.
  • Planning and interacting with University departments, academic colleges and external stakeholders.
  • Provide regular updates to admissions leadership on campus visit trends, challenges and opportunities.
  • Leadership, training and development of 120 student and part-time staff to ensure strong customer service and quality visit experiences for families.
  • Providing regular feedback to full-time, part-time, departmental contacts and others to ensure quality visit experiences for students and families.
  • Collaborate with the admissions communications team to develop and enhance messaging with campus visitors.
  • Develop and update recruitment messaging for visit and event attendees.
  • Ensure customer relationship management system enhances the visit experience.
  • Serve on various University committees to represent the Undergraduate Admissions Office.
  • Articulate admissions policies and procedures to students, parents, and school counselors.
  • Occasional travel and representation of NC State at local recruitment events.
  • Event/program planning and coordination.
  • Considerable amount of public speaking.

Other work/responsibilities:
  • Represent NC State University to prospective students, parents and stakeholders.
  • Extensive contact with the public, staff and stakeholders by phone, email and in person.
  • Counsel and advise prospective students, providing information about the University and its programs of study, admission standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Occasionally conduct information sessions for prospective students along with their parents.
  • Review academic credentials of applicants to make appropriate admissions decisions, applying holistic review of the application and supporting materials, including degree requirements and student characteristics which would indicate success in each area of study.

Other Responsibilities

  • Responsibilities will also include oversight of major admissions projects as assigned, including attending meetings with University faculty and various University committees to represent the Undergraduate Admissions office. 
  • This position will work directly with planning and implementing our transfer student recruitment plan and coordinating events related to transfer students.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience (may be substituted for the advanced degree on a case-by-case basis).

  • Ability to exercise judgment and work independently.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work creatively, collaboratively and effectively as a team member.
  • Strong organization and time management skills to ensure scheduled deadlines.
  • Computer proficiency – must be knowledgeable in the use of computerized management information systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to make accurate and consistent interpretations of a broad variety of academic and/or administrative policies and procedures.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, particularly in matters relative to sensitive or confidential student records, personnel or organizational matters.
  • In-depth analysis and counseling skills along with independent judgment and discretion to render appropriate admissions decisions.
  • Occasional flexibility to travel if needed.
  • Ability to lift up to 60 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a university work setting.
  • Experience organizing visit or event programming.
  • Two years admissions experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field required.

Required License(s) or Certification(s)

  • A valid North Carolina driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of start date.
  • Driver’s license must be maintained as a condition of employment.
