Job Description

Student Health and Well-Being (SHWB) is dedicated to fostering a holistic climate of well-being for Johns Hopkins students. With approximately 170 staff members serving over 24 thousand students and learners across nine academic divisions, the area provides access to primary care, mental health services, and student disability services. This university-wide function also includes a health promotions office that provides well-being outreach and education as well as sexual violence prevention, support, and response. We are seeking a Assistant Vice Provost, Strategic Initiatives, Administration & Operations / Student Health & Well-Being who will serve as a senior leader in SHWB supporting the VPSHWB's work to coordinate the university's current health and well-being resources for students and trainees and move them toward a more seamless university-wide model that removes barriers for to access services and resources.


The Assistant Vice Provost, Strategic Initiatives, Administration & Operations, Student Health & Well-Being will assist with the ongoing organizational development, critical functions, and goals of SHWB under the direction of the Vice Provost for Student Health and Well-Being (VPSHWB) at Johns Hopkins. Supports the work of the VPSHWB, in directing and managing the short and long-term critical priorities, initiatives, and activities that relate to current projects and goals that will enhance and/or transform the effectiveness, quality, and efficiency of Student Health and Well-being. The person will work as a member of the senior leadership team, providing project management, coordination, and tracking; policy development and review; and efficiency and operations excellence. This role requires strong organizational and collaboration skills, including planning, project management, organizational design, workflow improvements, quality management, budget oversight, supervisory skills, familiarity with health care and wellness in a higher education setting, and the ability to navigate a highly complex organization with diverse stakeholders. This individual will serve as an information conduit to the VPSHWB, providing critical information and updates on matters of significance in a timely and expeditious manner. This individual will participate in senior-level discussions and decision-making, presenting relevant information and research findings, benchmarking, tracking, and following up as appropriate on deliberations, decisions, and action plans.


This position will also have staff management responsibilities over a Communications and Training Specialist, and Project Manager focusing work on priorities of the VPSHWB and University leadership.


The Office of the Vice Provost for University-wide Student Health and Well-Being oversees a range of health and well-being services for students across the greater University including the Homewood, East Baltimore, and Washington DC campuses. The Office also liaises with other Student Services departments throughout the Johns Hopkins University and Hopkins Health Care system and advances collaborations to support University-wide Student Health and Well-Being objectives.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Student Health and Well-Being Operations and Administration

  • Support the Vice Provost in leading the operations of university-wide Student Health and Well-Being working in close consultation and collaboration with school-based leadership, Directors, and a variety of offices across all academic divisions as well as university student services personnel.
  • Conduct and/or research activities, in partnership with the Executive Director of Data, in support of planning and decision making such as benchmarking initiatives with peer institutions, including research of best practices.
  • Review and develop consistent policies, and practices across the units within the division.
  • Work closely with the senior leadership team, HR, and organizational development to design and map more consistent workflows that better leverage expertise and resources across the various units.
  • In consultation with SHWB senior leaders, risk management, and general counsel, conduct quality assurance testing, drafting, and contingency plans.
  • Serve as the information conduit to the VPSHWB, providing critical information and updates on matters of significance in a timely and expeditious manner such as internal audits and accreditations.
  • Review correspondence, communications, reports, and presentations submitted to the VPSHWB; obtain additional information and/or recommend appropriate changes to facilitate future discussions.
  • Ensures that the agenda and priorities of the VPSA’s office are understood, supported, and advanced, serving as the VPSA’s voice - conducting briefings or meetings, providing clarification, direction, or the necessary coordination, and/or carrying out key or vital initiatives on behalf of the VPSA.
  • Exercise independent discretion and judgment and assume full responsibility for resolving issues and problems of material importance.
  • Stay current on contemporary issues of the day in higher education and be able to give thoughtful insights and consideration to the variety of current and strategic issues and topics within Student Health and Well-Being.
  • Convenes manages, and facilitates workgroups as assigned by the VPSHWB.
  • Under the VPSHWB's direction, develop and support a culture of continuous quality improvement, shared efficiencies, and professionalism within Student Health and Well-Being.


Project Management

  • Manage critical, timely, and important short-term and long-term special projects on behalf of the Vice Provost through collaboration with and oversight of direct reports (Communications and Training Specialist, and Project Manager) in writing reports, developing plans, defining and communicating alternatives and making recommendations regarding appropriate courses of action based on a thorough understanding of desired outcomes, expectations, and timelines.
  • Assume responsibility for keeping broad Student Health and Well-Being initiatives on track and completed on a timely basis. This includes working directly with university administration as well as Deans and Directors from the schools university-wide to obtain and track pertinent, and frequently sensitive and confidential information.
  • Track and assess progress toward goals/priorities and take appropriate action to influence outcomes with the support of a project manager.
  • Supervise the development of student and staff engagement plans for the VPSHWB.


Represent Student Health and Well-Being Organization

  • Work with VPSA and coordinate with various offices and schools to respond to and handle urgent and crisis matters that come to the attention of the office
  • Builds and stays in close working relationships and coordination with a wide range of offices and staff, internal or external to the University as well as the Office of Student Health and Well-Being.
  • Independently represent the Vice Provost and the needs of Student Health and Well-Being at internal and external stakeholder meetings making needed decisions. Serve as a representative of the VPSHWB in his absence
  • Interact with members of the university administration and leadership of the JHU Schools on matters of importance to the Vice Provost on his behalf or in his absence.
  • Attend meetings, gather information, represent the Vice Provost, and make decisions as appropriate.


Department Support

  • Collaborate with administrative leadership of departments across the organization to prepare self-studies, and budget proposals and track space and operational needs.
  • Provide oversight of the VPSHWB central budget and assist the VP in annual budget proposals.
  • Assist the VPSHWB and collaborate with other leaders, including the finance and administration team, for the onboarding of managers and directors.
  • Supervise Training specialists in oversight of staff development, training, and onboarding plans.


Communications/Reporting

  • In consultation and collaboration with the Director of Data and Informatics, prepare quarterly and annual reports including operational performance, goal progress, and budgetary planning.
  • Manage and assess school service agreements for expected outcomes and evaluate potential changes or improvements including updates and annual reporting.
  • Supervise the communication and training specialist to develop, direct, and coordinate presentations, major addresses, remarks, and high-level briefings to the President, Provost, and other members of the university leadership and/or outside constituencies. Develop an internal communication plan to keep staff abreast of divisional changes, events, and initiatives.
  • Maintain the highest level of confidentiality.
  • Work with autonomy and respect the importance of collaboration to build agreement with university-wide student service leaders.

  • Ability to manage complex budgets with multiple funding sources.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with a diverse workforce and foster an environment that supports various viewpoints.
  • Proven ability to handle highly confidential information in a professional manner required.
  • Outstanding management skills particularly in strategic and operational planning, facilitation, team building, change management, and process improvement.
  • Must have the ability to exercise good judgment, make independent decisions, and establish and maintain cooperative relationships with senior leadership, university officials, and diverse teams across Student Services.
  • Strong supervisory abilities and proven experience in managing and developing high-performance individuals.
  • General knowledge of Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, Excel, project management, and web applications required.
  • Ability to travel to different campus locations within Baltimore and Washington DC.


Supervisory Responsibility

  • Project Manager.

  • Dotted line to a Communications team of four direct and indirect reports.
  • Dotted line to VP’s Executive Assistant.


Additional Information 

  • The following additional provisions may apply depending on which campus you will work. Your recruiter will advise accordingly. During the Influenza ('the flu') season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.
  • The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis Band documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own healthcare providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree required with a minimum of 7 years progressively responsible related experience in Student Services in Higher Education and/or Health Administration.
  • Experience in Project management, Process Optimization and/or Health Care Quality Improvement.
  • Two year's experience supervising professional level staff.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience working in student health and well-being and/or student services in a higher education institution.
  • Experience managing and developing staff.
  • Strong project management and tracking skills.
  • Crisis Management experience and skills.
  • Experience working and developing services and programs for diverse populations.
  • Project Management, Process Optimization, and/or Healthcare Quality Management training/certification are highly preferred.
