Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Department of Nutrition and Food Science at the University of Maryland, College Park invites applications for a 12-month non-tenured Professional Track Lecturer position to begin in August, 2024.

A new undergraduate major, Fermentation Science (FERM), was started at both the University of Maryland, College Park and the Universities at Shady Grove, in the fall semester, 2023. Faculty from the Department of Nutrition and Food Science (NFSC) and the Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture (PSLA) are teaching core courses pertaining to this major. NFSC Department is seeking experienced and qualified individual to teach the Fermentation Science Laboratory, the Sensory Analysis Laboratory, and the Experiential Learning courses. This individual will assist the functioning and routine maintenance of newly developed FERM laboratories at College Park and Shady Grove campuses and will develop relationships with the industry for student internship and other opportunities. The successful candidate will also serve as the Coordinator of the FERM program in the NFSC Department and provide advising and counselling to FERM students on both campuses. The position reports directly to the NFSC Departmental Chair and FERM Director, and coordinates with other departmental faculty, PSLA Coordinator and Chair, and Universities at Shady Grove administrators for additional course development, program advancement and promotion. This position is a fully-participating member in the NFSC Department decision-making, strategic planning, and recruitment. This position will also have opportunities to conduct innovative applied research on food safety, sustainability and utilization of processing waste by working with departmental faculty.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • The candidates must have earned MS (required) or doctorate (preferred) in food science, fermentation science or a related discipline.

Experience:
  • Two years of teaching experience at the post-secondary level and demonstrate excellence in teaching.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to teach Fermentation Science Laboratory and Sensory Analysis laboratory courses.
  • Excellent communication skills and commitment to teaching and mentoring undergraduate students is vital.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Doctorate in food science, fermentation science or a related discipline.
  • Relevant industry experience is preferred.

  • The successful candidate will have an office space on each campus and will spend at least 1.5 days each week on the Universities at Shady Grove campus.
