Job Summary and Responsibilities/Duties

Assists students in addressing barriers to persistence and provides the wrap-around and on-going supports students need to successfully complete a degree or certificate program. Coaches students, and assists them in navigating college systems and developing student self-advocacy skills. Assists students with life and career goal development, short and long-term academic planning, admissions, enrollment, and financial aid, resulting in individualized academic and funding plans. Works as part of a cross department team to plan, organize, and implement Summer Bridge Programming, Learning Communities, and other program required workshops and trainings.

Essential Duties:


  • Assists students in the development of meaningful education plans that are compatible with career and life goals. Advises students with the development of education plans, selection of appropriate courses, and interpretation of institutional requirements and assessment of progress toward established career and life goals. Assists students with the development of decision-making skills, awareness of educational resources, and reinforcement of self-direction in educational planning.
  • Works collaboratively with college faculty and staff to develop strategies for ensuring student success in class and to transition those who are ready for short-term certificate programs or degree programs. Works collaboratively with other departments to facilitate and address student and program needs.
  • Assists students with admissions, enrollment, financial aid, and academic status. Coordinates funding with other forms of financial assistance, resulting in an individualized funding plan that remains fiscally viable for the duration of each individual's participation in the program.
  • Facilitates and conducts new student orientations, Student Success seminars, and program related workshops.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains retention and transition strategies for assigned programs.
  • Creates brochures, transition materials, student guides, forms, and documents for distribution and/or presentation.
  • Provides support for students experiencing family, personal, or economic crises, which may impact school performance. Connects students to needed counseling services, support networks, community health, and/or housing services so students can persist in their studies.
  • Maintains confidential case files on each enrolled students with accurate cases notes and documentation. Gathers statistical and summary information for reports.

Additional Duties:
  • Acts as a college representative when visiting high schools, post-secondary institutions, agencies, business and industry, and professional organizations.
  • Trains student and part-time hourly employees. Provides input to supervisor on hiring and performance evaluation.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

 

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, business or related field

Experience/Training:


  • Minimum (3) years of experience in an advising, coaching or mentoring role
  • Current driver’s license, insurance and access to reliable automobile during work hours for transportation to off-campus sites. Must have at least three years of driving history.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered

Desired Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree
  • Knowledge of student services functions at community college setting such as financial aid, advising, and counseling
  • Experience with student services databases

 

Additional Qualifications and/or Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Knowledge of current computer software packages including intermediate-level knowledge of word processing, database, presentation and email applications, and beginning-level knowledge of spreadsheet applications, preferably within the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to interpret and apply institutional policies and procedures (e.g., limited/restricted entry and transfer program requirements) to assist students in making sound educational and career decisions.
  • Knowledge and ability to apply the application of placement and achievement testing philosophy to academic advising
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including active listening skills

 

Working Conditions and Important Information

 

Working Conditions:
Work is typically performed in a normal office environment working with a variety of people. Work environment is often noisy and crowded with students and staff. Occasional strain to the eyes while working with a computer terminal. Occasional local travel and evening hours expected. Occasional exposure to dangerous situations while driving between work sites, working after hours, and in dealing with difficult student situations.

Salary:
Initial salary placement will be based on years of relevant full-time equivalent experience at the sole discretion of the College, per the guidelines in the applicable Handbook or Collective Bargaining Agreement. Please include all relevant full and part-time experience in your application that you want the College to review towards potential placement. Hired employees will not have an opportunity to update past experience or appeal initial placement after the time of hire.
