Department

Biological & Agricultural Engineering (BAE)

About the Department

The Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering (BAE) is jointly administered by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the College of Engineering at NC State University. The department actively contributes to the academic, research and extension missions of the University.

The Biological and Agricultural Engineering (BAE) Research Shop is a fully functional machine and fabrication shop/cost center, that supports the BAE department as well as other College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and University departments and service units. The shop takes ideas and/or generated drawings from faculty, technical staff, graduate students, and senior design students and turns them into working prototype or final design models. We also repair and/or modify existing purchased or custom-made equipment and apparatus to fit the design of the project specifications.

Essential Job Duties

The Department of Biological & Agricultural Engineering (BAE) seeks a Welder / Fabricator to work in the department’s Research Shop. The Research Shop provides machining, fabrication and assembly of functional items and prototype equipment for BAE, other NC State departments and external clients. This position will work in a fast-paced environment to support the research and extension projects of faculty, staff and students.

The candidate will be expected to setup and plan jobs for fabrication with little or no assistance, from layout to delivery (reading blueprints and mechanical drawings; MIG, TIG, SMAW (stick), and FCAW welding of steel, stainless steel, and aluminum; use hand tools, files, and grinder to deburr and finish parts). The position will also design projects as needed and to document work progress in accordance with shop processes.

You Belong Here! At NC State, our goal is for all employees to reach their fullest potential at work. As you consider this opportunity, we encourage you to review our Employee Value Proposition (https://news.hr.ncsu.edu/you-belong-here/) and learn more about what makes NC State the best place to learn and work for everyone.

Other Responsibilities

The candidate will also be expected to load/unload trucks using forklift and assist with storage/maintenance of the Shop’s metal inventory. Occasional additional duties related to plumbing, electrical, moving furniture and/or equipment. Will be trained to handle facilities operations request in the absence of the Shop Manager. Will be asked to assist with forklift training classes within the department.

While driving a vehicle is not an essential function of this position, we believe it is necessary to have a valid NC driver’s license to perform the essential functions of the job. This position will need to travel off-site on occasion, alone and must independently be able to travel from location to location without reliance on others or the advanced notice that is often required of alternative means of transportation. Due to limitations in funding, the College cannot afford the high costs that would be required in attaining the services of transportation services such as taxis or car services. Should a viable candidate be identified from the recruitment without a license, which we believe to be necessary, we will engage your office and OIED in considering potential alternative solutions that may emerge from a request for a reasonable accommodation.
