Essential Job Duties

The Department of Statistics at North Carolina State University was founded in 1941 by Gertrude M. Cox and is one of the oldest and largest statistics programs in the country. The primary function of the Department is to achieve outstanding research, teaching, mentoring, consulting and collaborations on campus and world-wide, within a cohesive department, where all students, faculty, and staff receive fair treatment. The Department has over 40 faculty members, most of whom are housed in SAS Hall on the University’s main campus, along with more than 260 undergraduate and 150 graduate students. We are the “birthplace” of SAS Institute, the world’s largest privately owned software company, and one which specializes in statistical applications. The Department maintains a close relationship with SAS and other industry partners through student programs and activities.

The Department has expertise in a number of research areas (see https://statistics.sciences.ncsu.edu/research/research-areas/) and strong ties with the Data Science Academy (https://datascienceacademy.ncsu.edu/) and the Genetics and Genomics Academy (https://gga.ncsu.edu/) at NC State. Our graduate program, which is the top producer of statistics PhDs, was recently ranked 11th in the nation and 28th in the world (see https://statistics.sciences.ncsu.edu/know-us/rankings-awards-stats/); we also have a thriving online master’s program with approximately 100 students. Please visit our Sciences Strategic Plan and the College of Sciences Culture Charter to learn more about the College of Sciences.

NC State promotes an integrated approach to problem solving that transforms lives and provides leadership for social, economic, and technological development across North Carolina and around the world. NC State’s land grant mission of teaching, research and service is dedicated to the service of North Carolina and its people. Applicants are encouraged to review the institution’s mission, vision and strategic plan, and consider how their background, interest and experience would enable them to support the university.

NC State University has an open postdoctoral position under its NSF-funded Research Training Group (RTG) entitled Uncertainty Quantification for Life Sciences (UQ4Life). The postdoctoral associate is expected to engage in research at the interface of mathematics and statistics with applications to the life sciences, broadly defined. Based on background, strengths and interests, the postdoc will be assigned a Statistics or Mathematics research mentor from the faculty associated with the RTG: either Brian Reich or Erin Schliep from Statistics or Mette Olufsen or Kevin Flores from Mathematics. Applicants with experience in Bayesian modeling, spatial statistics, mathematical modeling, data integration, uncertainty quantification and/or machine learning are encouraged to apply. The postdoc will also play a leading role in co-mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, assist in organizing seminars and activities related to RTG activities and teach one course per semester in the Department of Statistics or Mathematics.

The postdoctoral associate must hold a PhD in Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related discipline awarded before August 1st, 2025. The position is for a term of up to three years, contingent upon performance. The starting date is anticipated to be August 2025. The position is restricted to US citizens, nationals and permanent residents. Participating trainees (undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral associates) supported with NSF funds in RTG must be citizens, nationals, or permanent residents of the United States or its territories and possessions. We are committed to building a collaborative workforce and welcome applicants from all backgrounds and experiences.
