The Department of Computer Science is an academic teaching and research department in the College of Engineering. It is a large and complex unit that encompasses research intensive, teaching intensive and professional activities. It is one of the largest such departments in the nation by the number of faculty and students, and its total budget and size are comparable to, or larger than, a number of NC State University colleges and divisions.
Essential Job Duties
This position serves as a Sponsored Research Administrator for the Department of Computer Science pre-award and post-award process.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Understanding and applying accounting principles and practices to a variety of accounting, budgeting, forecasting and other fiscal functions to the contracts and grants (ledger 5).
- Responsible for budgeting, cost accounting and other fiscal management of assigned contracts and grants (ledger 5) accounts. Fiscal responsibilities include reconciliation, monitoring and control of expense, verifying allowability of expenses, appropriately apply uniform guidance, preparing and understanding financial reports, managing accounting records associated with contracts and grants (ledger 5) accounts.
- Expense, variance and forecasting reporting.
- Development of controls for determining allowability of costs.
- Will assist faculty with both pre-award and post-award fiscal management and accounting
- Preparing and processing proposals through PINS, grants.gov, and other agency electronic submissions programs.
- Reviewing new award guidelines, procedures, and regulations with parties involved.
- Keeping up-to-date on compliance rules and regulations of NC State and of agencies including NSF, NSA, DARPA, etc.
- Post-award analysis of budgets including monitoring and reviewing expenditures for accuracy and compliance; and provide spending plan analysis and guidance to faculty.
- Provide projections and guidance on future expense planning.
- Cost share reporting.
- Reviewing human resource expenditures and travel vouchers/reimbursements for accuracy and compliance.
- Working with principal investigator on developing facets of the pre-award budgets and post-award budget changes following university and agency rules and regulations compliance and accounting.
- Requires working independently to provide financial reports, budget consultation and assist faculty with all aspects of project fiscal management and financial reporting.
- Responsible for ensuring compliance of all applicable best practices for the University, State and various program Sponsors.
- Award close-outs including budget change financial approval
- Developing and maintaining internal control procedures and processes for internal work-flow.

Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework OR
- Associate’s degree in Accounting OR
- Associate’s degree in Business or related discipline with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework OR
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Other Required Qualifications
- Proficient computer and web-based experience, including Microsoft Office products (i.e. Word and Excel), Google Apps (i.e. Drive, Docs, Forms, Sheets, etc.), capability to use Department Web based tools, and sponsor financial and proposal systems.
- Excellent time management skills and the ability to multi-task in a busy, fast-paced office with frequent deadlines and interruptions.
- Ability to work independently to accomplish job activities and have the ability to work in a group to effectively solve problems and manage new initiatives.
- Possess a customer focused workstyle.
- Must be well organized, detail oriented, and accurate.
- Knowledgeable and experienced in accounting principles and cost accounting standards.
- Ability to interpret and apply complete Federal and State fiscal regulations on allowability and allocability of cost.
- Identify and seek guidance in correcting accounting and financial problems and errors.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with individuals of varied backgrounds and responsibilities. Ability to convey complex information clearly.
- Pre-Award or Post Award contracts and grants experience.
- Efficient in University processes and systems
- Apply accounting principles with the ability to develop budgets. Works with Faculty and provides suggestions for budget development, and the allowability of cost.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and 2-4 years experience in accounting or sponsored research
- Experience in TEARS, PINS, WRS, RED, PeopleSoft Human Resources and Financials
- Experience in Research.gov, grants.gov and other agency submission systems
