GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Academic Advisor will advise students embracing the office's learner-centered and proactive advising models, while applying an equity lens to their execution of advising practice. The ideal candidate believes in the power of a growth mindset and asset-based practice, authentic teamwork, setting priorities and successfully achieving them. With a global perspective and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, the Academic Advisor will be an integral part of the student retention and completion team. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required. The SUCCESS Fund is a case management-based program that provides students with opportunities for academic success, career development, and identity development.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Provide proactive and learner-centered academic advising to students utilizing both individual and group formats and applying an equity lens to the execution of advising practice.
  • Execute advising sessions based on enrollment/re-enrollment plans, major/career exploration, transfers to and from the College, and academic improvement plans in relation to early alerts or probation/suspension/dismissal concerns.
  • Utilize case management protocols to oversee a caseload of students.
  • Cultivate relationships with advisees by engaging in regular communication via in person and remote meetings, email, phone, and social media outlets.
  • Advise students on best practices to develop academic plans of study based upon their career objectives, readiness assessments, degree requirements, and other academic, and personal factors.
  • Utilize advising technology to assess students' academic progress and success, follow up with students and faculty on Early Alert warnings, and schedule advising appointments.
  • Serve as advising liaison to faculty within assigned academic departments and staff in partner offices.
  • Maintain professional knowledge in applicable areas such as advising theory and current literature, FERPA regulations, campus policy and procedure, and professional development opportunities.
  • Participate and assist in the coordination of campus activities such as Pathways, New Student Orientation, Open House, etc.
  • Maintain advising notes on student interactions.
  • Refer students to relevant support services such as tutoring, disability services, academic divisions, etc.
  • Use technology-enabled advising practices including electronic degree audits, communication tools, notes, and record keeping and sharing.
  • Participate in ongoing advisor training.
  • Other duties related to academic advising as assigned by Director.

Job Requirements:


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
:

  • Master's degree in academic advising, behavioral or social sciences, or related field with three (3) years of experience and/or training involving academic advising or career development; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working with college students from diverse race, gender, age, religious, and identity backgrounds.
  • Ability to work with students that have low confidence or motivation to learn mathematics.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Community college experience.
  • Experience using the Jenzabar student information system.
  • Experience using EAB Navigate software.
  • Extensive academic coaching background, preferably with low-income adults and marginalized communities.
  • Experience advising community college students; prior work experience with TRIO/SSS programs desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and conduct workshops on academic and life skills.

Additional Information:


COMPENSATION
: Full-time MCCC Unit Position; Grade 5 Academic Counselor with an anticipated annual salary range of $64,292 - $74,615. Actual salary will be consistent with the MCCC/MTA Collective Bargaining Agreement, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Includes participation in a comprehensive employee benefits program including option for membership in the Massachusetts State Employees' Retirement System.
