Associate Technical Instructor, Hobby Shop

Job Description

ASSOCIATE TECHNICAL INSTRUCTOR, Hobby Shop, to join a fully equipped wood and metal shop that teaches students the art of thoughtful design. The Hobby Shop has been fostering MIT’s spirit of learning by doing for over 85 years by providing tools, training, and assistance in a supportive and safe shop to all MIT students, faculty, staff and alums interested in turning their ideas into reality.  Will serve as a resource for members on a wide range of woodworking and metal working projects, teaching one-on-one practical hands-on skills and design; proactively engage with students and other members on the safe and effective use of equipment and tools; assist with design problem solving and shop and equipment maintenance; handle administration of shop membership and activities; and assist the director in maintaining a safe, neat, friendly, positive, and respectful environment where all are welcome to design and build regardless of experience.

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED:  bachelor’s degree; five years’ experience using CAD/CAM and understanding and ensuring the safe implementation of woodworking and metal machining; comfort with individual instruction, especially with novices; expertise in machine and tool maintenance, CNC machining, and 3D printing; willingness to learn all shop equipment, including Omax water jet machining, CNC lathe, mill, and router; strong computer skills including computer and machine set up and fixturing; and familiarity with computer design and manufacturing programs such as Autodesk Fusion 360, SolidWorks, Rhino, and Mastercam.  PREFERRED:  design and/or engineering degree; college teaching experience; and experience with Excel and Google Docs for membership database, interdepartmental billing, webpage editing, Illustrator, Corel Draw (laser cutter), and Photoshop.  Job #24165

Salary: $60,000 - 80,000, depending on relevant experience and education.

This is a full-time position requiring evening/Saturday work during fall/spring semesters.
