Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Associate Provost, the Dean of Workforce Education provides leadership and coordination with the Workforce Education Division. Plans and coordinates all aspects of the programs/departments which align with the college mission. Oversees curriculum and program development. Enhances educational effectiveness of all assigned instructional areas. Provides support to workforce instructional departments in accordance with the Laredo College District policies and procedures. These departments include Business Management, Camilo Prada Center, Child Development, Computer Sciences and Technology, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Engineering, Design, and Construction Management Technology, Global Import, Export, and Logistics Center, Homeland Security and Emergency Management Studies, Industrial and Electronic Technologies, Protective Services, Regional Law Enforcement Academy, Transportation Technology, and the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Grant.

 Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Serve as the Dean for all Workforce Education Programs.
  2. Provide leadership in developing and integrating instructional strategic plans, goals, and objectives consistent with the institutional mission.
  3. Provide leadership for decision-making and problem-solving within the Workforce Division.
  4. Provide sustained leadership in curriculum improvement through constant review, regular evaluation, revision, and attention to the relevance of all courses and programs.
  5. Participation in shared leadership with the department chairs and faculty members.
  6. Coordinate preparing schedules, teaching assignments, and class and room assignments.
  7. Monitor class enrollment and adjust according to registration trends and fiscal demands.
  8. Promote, organize, coordinate, and provide the leadership to develop programs.
  9. Oversee preparation of appropriate documentation required to obtain and maintain programmatic certification/recognition.
  10. Develop and foster positive working relations with placement sites; develop placement agreements.
  11. Coordinate and evaluate instructional staff, including faculty, department chairs, and support staff.
  12. Participate in the recruitment selection and orientation of qualified full-time and adjunct faculty; evaluate credentials/records for all faculty members.
  13. Prepare and submit reports required for performance measures, federal and state reporting, articulation agreements, and certification compliance.
  14. Participate in developing informational materials for publication (brochures, pamphlets, etc.); coordinate programmatic promotions such as tours and school presentations; provide data for the College catalog about the unit.
  15. Participate in the development of external grants for the unit.
  16. Provide leadership relating to student issues, including complaints, faculty, advising, and registration.
  17. Establish and maintain external relationships that benefit instruction, including those of business and industry, community, secondary and post-secondary institutions, and other appropriate agencies.
  18. Participate in Southern Association accreditation activities; implement Instructional Effectiveness plan related to areas supervised.
     19. Perform other duties assigned by the Associate Provost.

Qualifications/Certifications/Licenses/Skills

Required:

  • A Master’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education and three years of full-time teaching experience at the college level.
  • Three years of progressively increasing administrative experience, including experience developing and monitoring budgets and experience in management, preferably in a higher education environment.
Preferred:
  • An earned Doctorate degree from an accredited institution of higher education in education, leadership, or a related field and three years of full-time teaching experience at the college level are required.

  • Effective instructional and administrative skills, knowledge of student outcomes assessment, and instructional effectiveness.

Supervision Received
The Dean of Workforce Education reports directly to the Associate Provost. 
The Provost/Vice-President of Academic Affairs will also supervise when necessary.
 
Physical Requirements  
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit.  
The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch.  
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment 
Work is performed in a standard office environment.    
Work-inside a well-lighted and air-conditioned area most of the time.  
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
