Job Summary
The Urban and Regional Planning Program at the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning is seeking a practice track faculty member at the rank of adjunct practice instructor. We are looking for someone with significant professional experience in urban planning law to co-teach the graduate-level course URP 502: U.S. Planning Institutions and Law in the winter 2025 semester (January 1 - April 30). The course provides a general overview of the legal aspects of urban and regional planning, including institutional structures, sources of and limits on legal authority, and traditional and evolving approaches to land use and development control. The principal focus of the course will be on the relationships between planning as a public policy-making process and the laws that authorize, implement, and constrain planning initiatives.
The primary role of this co-instructor position will be to provide professional writing instruction to graduate students taking the course. Instruction activities will include at least the following activities: co-instructing with the lead instructor for one or more course lectures on professional writing; meeting with individual students to provide feedback on writing organization, mechanics, and presentation for drafts of four policy/legal memos assigned over the course of the semester; grading final drafts of those four memos; and assisting the lead instructor on writing instruction for other written student work products (e.g., legal case briefs) as mutually agreed upon. The expected effort for the appointment is 12.5%.
The Urban and Regional Planning (URP) Program in the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan prepares graduate students for the urban planning profession which is concerned with the human and physical environments of cities and regions. A primary goal of the profession is to improve the quality of life in places - whether neighborhoods, cities, metropolitan regions, rural settlements, or larger regions, anywhere in the world.
