About the Department

The facility is located in the College of Veterinary Medicine. The cell sorting unit is used for a wide variety of applications including sorting immune cells, bacterial cells, reproductive cells, and can also be used for separation of pharmaceutical delivery particles. The flow cytometry units are utilized for analysis of mammalian cells, avian (bird) cells, and other biological specimens.

Essential Job Duties

The Cell Sorting Facility Manager will oversee the technical operations and day-to-day management of the Flow Cytometry Core within the College of Veterinary Medicine. This individual will serve as the primary operator of the cell sorter, responsible for running all samples, assisting with study design, and troubleshooting technical issues. Clients will include investigators from NC State University, surrounding universities, and industry partners. The facility supports diverse applications, including sorting immune cells, bacterial cells, reproductive cells, and pharmaceutical delivery particles, as well as analyzing mammalian, avian, and other biological specimens.

As part of a service core, the manager will be responsible for maintaining accurate billing, managing the facility budget, and providing top-tier client service. Key responsibilities include:

  • Operating the cell sorter and overseeing all sample runs for a variety of research applications.
  • Assisting clients with study design, data analysis, and troubleshooting.
  • Interfacing with clients of the facility on research design and execution and organizing quarterly educational opportunities.
  • Managing the facility’s budget, accounting, and billing processes.
  • Ensuring preventative maintenance and quality control of all equipment.
  • Scheduling equipment usage to optimize workflow and access.
  • Organizing quarterly educational opportunities for clients and collaborators.
  • Teaching and training graduate students and faculty on the use of flow cytometric analyzers.

This role requires excellent organizational skills, a strong technical background, and the ability to interface with researchers across disciplines to support innovative scientific work.

Minimum Education and Experience

Requires possession of post-baccalaureate credentials or a comparable record of independent research productivity.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Background in biological research, laboratory methods and/or veterinary medicine.
  • Significant experience with cell sorting and flow cytometry including study design and troubleshooting.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and promptly and work with a community of users.
  • Aptitude for and desire to teach/train graduate students and faculty.
  • Ability to work with budgets, including client billing and cost accounting.
  • Ability and interest in developing and managing a growing service core.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD preferred.
  • Extensive experience in cell sorting, preferably with Cytek software.
  • High-speed cell sorting experience
  • Extensive experience in flow cytometry, experience with flow cytometry software including CellQuest, FACSDiva, and Flowjo
  • Experience with 10x Genomics single cell sequencing.
  • Experience with preclinical study execution and design.
  • Preference will be given to a graduate degree (MS or PhD (preferred)) in immunology, cell biology, or related fields. Significant experience with flow cytometry and/or cell sorting experience.
