Job Description

We are seeking a Research Exercise Counselor/Nutrition Tech who will be an integral part of the Human Performance and Research Nutrition Core. This position performs exercise testing such as cardiopulmonary exercise tests (CPET), dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), body composition measurements, energy measurements as well as 24-hour dietary recalls and health coaching. Other duties include computer nutrient analyses of diets, menu planning, anthropometric measurements, instructing and directing patients on research protocols, and allergy dosing. Other duties as needed include moderate cooking, packing out research meals and formula preparation as well as managing exercise, energy and nutrition data of certain protocols for pediatric, adult and outpatient research participants. The position reports directly to the Associate Director of the Human Performance Core/Research Nutrition Director and indirectly to the Sr. Research Nutritionists.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conform to work policies and procedures of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
  • Perform cardiopulmonary exercise tests (CPET) and VO2 max testing.
  • Perform pulse wave velocity using sphygmorco equipment.
  • Perform body composition, such as DXA, bioelectrical impedance (BIA), anthropometric measurements at both Bayview and East Baltimore (JHH).
  • Perform 6-minute walk testing (6MWT) on high-risk populations with cardiovascular disease.
  • Perform high level disinfection (HLD) on related equipment (CPET and VO2 max)
  • Conduct telephone and in-person food questionnaire interviews with research patients using different nutrition research tools, such as the NDSR 24-hour dietary recalls.
  • Prepare reports, collect and analyze data, and maintain records.
  • Manage and organize research protocols and dietetic internship rotation binders.
  • Perform health coaching under the direction of the Sr. Research Nutritionists.
  • Perform moderate meal preparation and calculation of research diets and weighing out allergy doses.
  • Review other food and exercise questionnaires for completeness and accuracy.
  • Collect and enter nutrition and exercise data into the computer database.
  • Interact with medical professionals, such as physicians, principal investigators, clinical and research nurses, and research coordinators.
  • Perform literature searches of references for various research studies.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as assigned by the Research Nutrition Director and Director of the Human Performance Core.
  • Perform dosing for oral food challenges and take-home dose for allergy protocols.


Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications

  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), ServSafe Certification, Nutrient Data System for Research (NDSR) certification, iDXA certification, Basic Life Support (BLS) training.
  • All certifications and trainings must be completed within 6 months after starting the position.


Physical requirements

  • Able to lift up to 20 pounds.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Physiology or related science required.
  • One year exercise assessment or comparable related experience required.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • ACSM-EP, ACSM-CEP or AACVPR certification.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), ServSafe Certification, Nutrient Data System for Research (NDSR) certification, iDXA certification, Basic Life Support (BLS) training. (Certifications and trainings must be completed within 6 months after starting the position.)
