DESCRIPTION
This position is a full-time tenure track, 10-month classroom teaching assignment in the Health & Public Safety Division. The current teaching load is 15 lecture hour equivalents per semester. Faculty are also responsible for 5-office hours per week and are expected to devote as much time as necessary to perform the professional responsibilities of the position. Participation in professional activities, curriculum development, and campus committees is expected. The teaching assignment may include courses offered in either onsite, online and/or hybrid format, evening and/or Saturday classes. This position will be reassigned approximately 40% load corresponding to approximately 10 hours per week to carry out the Respiratory Therapy Program Director duties (required by regulatory agencies) for the Antelope Valley College Respiratory Therapy Program.
The Respiratory Therapy Program Director (PD) plans and supervises all aspects of the Associate of Science Degree in Respiratory Care and the Bachelor of Science Degree Respiratory Care while maintaining the academic responsibility to review, develop, and manage all Respiratory Therapist courses. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the development, evaluation, and implementation of the Respiratory care curriculum, oversight of Program budgets, Academic Program Review, and Program accreditation, review and administration of pertinent policies and procedures, and assessment of personnel performance metrics as needed.The PD may be expected to work in a classroom, lab, and clinical settings incorporating computer activities, as well as one with a traditional instructional format or online. The PD is responsible for all aspects of the program, both administrative and educational. Administrative aspects include fiscal planning, curricular planning and development, continuous review and analysis of outcomes, and the overall effectiveness of the program based on student learning outcomes relative to program expectations
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
- Teach 15-lecture hour equivalencies per semester in Respiratory Technologies using various teaching methods including demonstrations and active learning strategies.
- Maintain 5-office hours per week.
- Responsible for preparation time.
- Participate in faculty/division meetings; yearly program review; curricular planning, development, and implementation; student learning outcomes: data collection and writing outcomes analysis, program learning outcomes, development, assessment, and implementation; evaluation of educational programs; and college governance to advance the college's mission and strategic goals.
- Participate in faculty professional development and continuing education activities that are designed to maintain and develop currency in the field, pedagogy (for traditional and online teaching and learning), and student support strategies, especially as they relate to student equity initiatives.
- Maintain records of attendance, census, grades, etc.
- Provide an environment conducive to effective learning.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees and others encountered in the course of work.
- Frequent, regular and consistent contact with students and program faculty regardless of program location.
- Demonstrate a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
- Travel between district locations is also expected.
- Performs other instructional-related duties as assigned.
- Instructors may be assigned a combination of daytime, evening, and/or Saturday classes, as the college is dedicated to the educational success of a diverse student body with diverse needs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Per CoARC Accreditation StandardDA2.4 & DA2.5 for Degree Advancement Programs in Respiratory Care, the PD must have the following education/experience:
- A master’s degree
- A valid Registered Respiratory Therapy (RRT) credential OR be a physician (MD or DO)
- A current professional license or certificate unless exempted from licensure under state or federal law
- A minimum of four (4) years’ experience as an RRT OR physician (MD or DO) with at least two (2) years must include experience in clinical respiratory care, pulmonary medicine, cardiothoracic surgery, critical care, anesthesiology, healthcare administration, healthcare research, or a subject area directly related to the degree conferred.
- A minimum of two (2) years’ teaching experience in clinical respiratory care, research, management, education, or a subject area directly related to the degree conferred by the program.
- Completion of the CoARC Key Personnel Training Program*
* Completion of the CoARC Key Personnel Training Program must be completed within one year of hire.
- A sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students in a manner relevant to the position (tit. 5 § 53024.1).
