Job Summary

The Residential College Science, Technology and Society Program http://www.rc.lsa.umich.edu/ is seeking to hire one Intermittent Lecturer to instruct a course on energy, environment, and climate in the Science Program for the Winter 2025 semester.  This position will be a 33.33% position for teaching one course in the winter semester.

Responsibilities*

The candidate will provide instruction for a class of up to 25 undergraduates in an interdisciplinary liberal arts program. Additional duties include participation in college- and program-wide activities, including attending student exhibitions and program meetings.  The instructor will provide written evaluations for Residential College students enrolled in the course.

The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise and background in instruction in the area of energy systems, environment, and climate.  The applicant should have a background in or detailed knowledge of the physics of energy, energy technology, fossil-fuel energy sources, renewable energy sources, the modern demands for energy supplies in industrialized and developing countries, and the environmental and social impacts of different energy sources.

Required Qualifications*

Minimum: PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, or Natural Resources is preferred.  Other disciplines may be considered depending on experience in teaching energy systems, environment and climate.  

Desired Qualifications*

College teaching experience of subject matter is preferred.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.

This 3-credit course focuses on Energy, Environment and Climate.  Goals for the course will provide students with an introduction to energy systems from an environmental perspective.  All forms of energy production and use impose costs to the natural environment and human health.  The course will consider how existing energy systems operate, what changes are possible, and which choices can support a sustainable energy future.  Objectives for the course will focus on students understanding the fundamental types of energy and how energy is converted from one form to another, qualitatively and quantitively describing the energy system that powers our economy and the systems that delivers energy to the point-of-use, calculating efficiencies of energy conversions and energy delivery systems, identifying significant environmental and human health impacts associated with energy supply, critically evaluating the potential for alternative energy resources and emerging technologies, and explaining how policy and regulation, science and technology and individual behavior determine how energy systems evolve.
